How to read Day-7 retention without fooling yourself
Day-7 retention is popular because leadership can remember a single percentage. In App Analytics — user retention and cohort analysis, that number only means something when the cohort is comparable to the week before.
Start by fixing the definition of “returned.” Does a push notification open count, or only an intentional session with a core action? Write the rule once and stick to it for the comparison window.
Next, split the cohort by acquisition source before you celebrate a lift. A campaign that brings bargain hunters may flatten Day-7 even when product quality is unchanged. Compare like with like: organic installers against organic installers, referral users against referral users.
Finally, look at the shape of the curve between Day-1 and Day-7, not only the endpoint. A soft Day-2 after a strong Day-1 often points to onboarding friction. A late collapse near Day-6 can signal notification fatigue or a missing habit cue.
Bring these three checks into your next retention review meeting. They take minutes and prevent weeks of chasing the wrong experiment.
